World of Science Stirred, Social Media Abuzz: Could 3I/ATLAS Be a Spacecraft?

The Solar System is hosting its third known interstellar visitor: 3I/ATLAS. With its extraordinary behaviour and unusual chemical makeup, this mysterious object has left astronomers astonished — and ignited “alien spacecraft” discussions across social media. While scientists race to uncover its true nature, the question remains: what exactly are we dealing with?
In an interview with Hürriyet.com.tr, Prof. Dr. Tolgahan Kılıçoğlu draws attention to December as a critical period of observation and weighs the possibility of non-natural origins.

An interstellar visitor arrives

In recent years, astronomers have grown accustomed to remarkable encounters with objects entering the Solar System from beyond. Following 1I/ʻOumuamua and 2I/Borisov, the enigmatic 3I/ATLAS is now in the spotlight. Classified as the third interstellar object, it was discovered in July 2025 by the ATLAS survey telescope. Observations revealed it moves on a hyperbolic trajectory, confirming it’s not bound to the Sun.

A “spaceship?” Social media sparks speculation

Though 3I/ATLAS is considered by many scientists to be a comet, its chemical composition, behaviour, and trajectory have triggered speculation about alien technology. Astrophysicist Avi Loeb—with the Harvard-based Initiative for Interstellar Studies—argues that the object’s unusually high alignment with the ecliptic plane and its unexpected chemical signature make a purely natural explanation less likely. Medium He even suggests the possibility of “mini-probes” being released by the object. In his words: > “The chance of such a large object entering the Solar System by chance at such a favourable angle is very low.”

Expert commentary: “Alien technology? Possible, though unlikely”

Prof. Dr. Tolgahan Kılıçoğlu from Ankara University offered a measured view:

“First, it must be noted that Avi Loeb’s paper on 3I/ATLAS as alien technology has not been published in a peer-reviewed journal. Such absence means the work has not been validated by the community.”
He continues:
“The possibility of alien technology is not zero. However, it is so small compared with natural explanations that treating the subject as a science-fiction scenario is closer to the mark.”

Motivations behind the speculation

According to Kılıçoğlu, two factors may be pushing the “alien craft” narrative:

  1. The authors of the paper, including Loeb, are affiliated with the “Initiative for Interstellar Studies,” a group focused on spacecraft and engineering concepts for interstellar travel—highlighting that encountering objects from beyond the Solar System could justify significant funding.

  2. The competitive nature of astronomy—discovering an extraterrestrial artifact could bring major prestige, funding and even a Nobel Prize. Kılıçoğlu warns that emphasising small probabilities of alien technology may attract attention short-term, but could erode scientific credibility in the long run.

Strange activity, but not proof

Recent observations by the Hubble Space Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope show that 3I/ATLAS became active before approaching the Sun, which is unusual for comets. Scientists noted a jet of gas directed toward the Sun—rather than away from it, as typical. Some interpret this as the action of a hypothetical thruster. Kılıçoğlu explains a natural alternative: if the object is rich in carbon dioxide ice, even weak solar heating can cause abrupt sublimation, creating out-flows and dust that scatter sunlight and mimic a comet-like tail in the “wrong” direction.

He further states:

“Even if not alien, this remains a very rare interstellar object. Its high carbon dioxide content compared to solar system comets suggests that bodies formed elsewhere may have far more diverse chemical compositions.”

December in the spotlight

Kılıçoğlu highlights that mid-December presents the best window for new observations—when 3I/ATLAS reaches its closest point to Earth (though still nearly twice as far from the Sun). At that time, powerful telescopes—including Hubble, Webb, and ground-based giants such as the Gemini North/South—are expected to observe the object through multiple filters and spectra, scrutinising its size, temperature and tail structure.

“Spectral measurements will tell us which atoms and molecules are present, helping decide whether this visitor is purely natural or warrants deeper technological speculation,” Kılıçoğlu adds.

Final assessment

While the fascinating possibility of alien technology receives attention, the overwhelming consensus in the astronomical community remains that 3I/ATLAS is a comet—albeit an extraordinary one. For now, the object offers a unique window into the contents and dynamics of material from other star systems. The observations yet to come in December may further tip the balance between natural marvel and technological wonder.
