Ancient City of Ani

Located on the Arpaçay River bordering Armenia, Ani is known as the “City of Forty Gates” and the “Cradle of Civilizations.” A UNESCO World Heritage site, it is particularly stunning in winter when its historic buildings are covered in snow. The complex includes the Ebül‑Hasan Menüçehr Mosque, Fethiye Mosque, the oldest Turkish bath in Anatolia, Surp Krikor Church, and city walls decorated with Seljuk ornaments. Archaeological excavations continue to reveal new historical details. (ongoing digs)

Sarıkamış Ski Resort

Sarıkamış is one of Turkey’s premier winter resorts, famous for its unique “crystal snow”, found only in the Alps and this region. Located at an altitude of 2,634 metres, the slopes are surrounded by pine forests, protecting skiers from wind and avalanche risks. The total length of the runs exceeds 30 kilometres.

Lake Çıldır

This tectonic freshwater lake, at an altitude of 1,959 metres, freezes in winter, allowing tourists to ride traditional horse‑drawn sleighs on its surface. Ice thickness in some areas exceeds half a metre.

Historical Fortresses

The Kars Fortress, built in the 12th century, and the Ardahan Fortress, constructed in the 16th century, have long protected the eastern borders and stand as impressive examples of Ottoman and medieval architecture. 12th c. · 16th c.

Museums of the Region

The Kars Cheese Museum showcases traditional production of Kars Kaşar and Gruyère cheeses, while the Caucasus Bee Museum introduces the Caucasian honeybee, features VR experiences of hive life, and demonstrates local beekeeping techniques.

❄️ Kars and Ardahan offer a unique combination of winter recreation, history, and culture, making the region one of Turkey’s most attractive travel destinations.
