LG €1Bn Battery Plant in Turkey | Green Energy Investment

LG Invests €1 Billion in Turkey's Largest Battery Factory

Key Deal: Turkish energy company Go Energy and South Korean tech giant LG have signed a historic agreement to build one of the region's largest battery and energy storage system (ESS) manufacturing plants in Ankara. The total investment exceeds 1 billion euros.

Construction of the plant will begin shortly, with its launch planned for the second quarter of 2026. This project is recognized as one of Türkiye's most significant private investments in the high-tech and green energy sectors.

🔋 A New Hub for Advanced Energy Technology

The factory will utilize LG's advanced technologies to produce high-efficiency lithium-ion batteries and comprehensive energy storage systems (BESS).

Production Capacity:
Initial Capacity: 2.5 GWh per year.
Planned Capacity after Expansion: Up to 7.5 GWh per year.

Supply Geography: Production will target both the domestic Turkish market and exports to Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

“This project is not just about building a factory. It is about establishing a full-fledged technology hub in Türkiye for a critically important future industry. Our products, developed with LG's technology, will compete in the global market,” said Go Energy CEO Gökhan Yıldız.

👷‍♂️ Boost for the Economy and Science

The project will have a significant multiplicative effect on the regional and national economy.

  • Job Creation: Approximately 900 highly skilled jobs will be created directly at the plant. Thousands of additional jobs are expected in related industries and logistics.
  • Research Center: A modern Research and Development (R&D) center will be opened in Ankara as part of the project, focusing on adapting battery technologies for local markets.
  • Technology Transfer: Collaboration with LG will ensure the transfer of advanced know-how and the training of world-class Turkish engineers and technologists.

🌍 Strategic Importance for Türkiye's Energy Sector

The launch of the plant is a key element of Türkiye's national energy strategy.

Context: According to government forecasts, Türkiye's electricity demand will increase sharply by 2050. Simultaneously, the country is betting on a sharp increase in intermittent renewable energy (solar and wind). Large-scale energy storage is essential for grid stability.

The new LG-Go Energy plant will become the primary domestic source of modern energy storage systems, enabling:

  • Reduced dependence on imports of critical energy technologies.
  • Enhanced reliability and flexibility of the national power grid.
  • Acceleration of the energy transition and climate goals.
  • Strengthening of Türkiye's position as a regional exporter of high-tech products.

Final Takeaway: A Game-Changing Project

The investment between Go Energy and LG puts Türkiye on the map of the global battery industry. This is a direct contribution to technological sovereignty, the green agenda, and economic development. The project's success could attract further investments to the country.

Expected Launch: Q2 2026.
