Türkiye Braces for Mild and Delayed Winter Season
🌡️❄️ Türkiye Braces for Mild, Delayed Winter Season ☀️⏳
Istanbul, Türkiye – Unusually warm winter expected with above-average temperatures
Türkiye is set for an unusually mild winter this year, with temperatures expected well above seasonal norms from December through February, while rainfall is projected to stay near average levels.
According to the Turkish State Meteorological Service, winter temperatures are likely to be 0.5 to 2°C above normal 🌡️, reducing the chances of widespread snowfall, especially in lowland areas.
Meteorology official Şahin Şahbaz noted that short cold spells and isolated snow events are still possible, but overall, a warmer-than-usual winter is anticipated. ❄️ Snowfall totals are expected to remain below average in many regions.
📅 Seasonal Outlook
- December: 1–2°C warmer than normal nationwide, with precipitation near average; fewer snow opportunities 🌨️
- January: Above-normal temperatures across most regions; coastal Aegean and western Marmara closer to seasonal averages
- February: Warm across much of the country, particularly in the Black Sea region, eastern and southeastern provinces, and parts of the Mediterranean ☀️
⚠️ "Warmer temperatures may trigger early budding and flowering in plants, raising the risk of damage from late-season frost." — Şahin Şahbaz
Prominent meteorologist Professor Orhan Şen expects the Siberian high-pressure system to influence Türkiye mainly after January, resulting in what he describes as an "average but delayed winter" ⏳.
🚨 Weather Warnings
Severe rain warning issued for 14 provinces in the Aegean and Mediterranean regions, including İzmir, Muğla, and Antalya, cautioning residents about potential flash floods 🌧️💧.
⚠️ Affected areas should prepare for: Heavy rainfall, possible flooding, and transportation disruptions.
Meanwhile, central and eastern Türkiye are seeing temperatures returning toward normal, with fog and low visibility 🌫️ during mornings and evenings. Daily highs are expected to reach 10°C in Istanbul, 12°C in Ankara, and 16°C in İzmir, while higher-altitude areas may still experience snow or mixed precipitation.
