Istanbul Launches Student Meal Program
Istanbul authorities have launched an initiative to provide thousands of students with regular meals. Under the program, children from low-income families will receive 2,000 Turkish lira (around $45) per month to spend on school cafeteria meals.
⟡ first phase 20,000 students · ⟡ target up to 100,000 children · ⟡ eligibility social assistance registry
In the first phase, 20,000 students will benefit, with the long‑term goal of reaching up to 100,000 children. The program targets families registered in the social assistance system, and the funds can only be used for school meals.
Governor of Istanbul Davut Gül emphasized that eligibility will be determined based on transparent income criteria, ensuring support is provided without stigma.
“We want children to have nutritious meals and not miss school due to financial difficulties,” he said.
The program launches as students across Turkey head into a nine‑day spring break, coinciding this year with Eid al‑Fitr — a time of family gatherings, traditional sweets, and festive meals.
