Türkiye Down Syndrome Association Wins Zero Project Award for Post-Earthquake Initiative
The Türkiye Down Syndrome Association (TDSA) has been honored at the prestigious Zero Project conference in Vienna for its innovative post-earthquake initiative, "+1 Academy for the Future." Launched after the devastating February 6, 2023, earthquakes in eastern Türkiye, the project provides scalable support for people with disabilities affected by disasters.
The Zero Project recognizes effective and replicable solutions in disability rights worldwide. TDSA received the award in the Crisis Response category for its work across 11 provinces, including container-based education centers in the four hardest-hit regions. Over two years, the project offered special education, psychological counseling, physiotherapy, and social support to nearly 30,000 people , not only individuals with Down Syndrome but all children with disabilities and those with typical development.
"Immediately after the earthquake, we focused on basic needs—shelter, heating, food, and personal care. Only after three months did educational and psychosocial support become the priority."
Ozgur Konuk highlighted the importance of a phased disaster response. The centers also served as social spaces, allowing families to connect, share experiences, and find comfort during a challenging time.
Families praised the initiative for its personalized approach. "You were the first group to address us by name," said one parent, reflecting the impact of direct, individualized support amid widespread aid efforts.
Founded in 2009, TDSA operates nationally and internationally and serves as Vice President of the European Down Syndrome Association. The organization is recognized for setting global standards in education, healthcare, employment, independent living, and advocacy for people with Down Syndrome.
Konuk emphasized that while these efforts are crucial, a systematic disability perspective in disaster management is needed. The award not only recognizes TDSA's achievements but also provides international visibility for a model that could guide inclusive disaster response worldwide.
