Turkey Night Credit Card Rules: Chip ID Required 10PM-6AM
🇹🇷 Turkey Introduces Night-Time Restrictions on Credit Card Cash Withdrawals
Turkey's Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BDDK) has announced new nationwide security measures aimed at reducing the growing number of digital banking fraud cases.
Under the new rules, cash withdrawals made with credit cards between 22:00 and 06:00 will require identity verification using Turkey's new chip-enabled ID card.
⚠️ Important: If a user does not have a chip ID or their phone does not support NFC, night-time cash withdrawals from credit cards will not be possible.
🔍 Why the Restrictions Are Being Introduced
Turkey has seen a sharp rise in mobile and online banking fraud, particularly at night, when victims are less likely to notice suspicious activity.
Criminals often gain access to accounts and perform cash withdrawals or transfers while users are asleep, leaving them unable to react in time.
🕓 How the New System Will Work
- Hours affected: 22:00–06:00
- Allowed operations: Cash withdrawal only with identity verification via chip ID
- Requirement: Smartphone with NFC to read the ID card
- Without NFC or a chip ID: Cash withdrawal is blocked until 06:00
This means users without a modern ID card or NFC-enabled smartphone will only be able to withdraw cash during daytime.
🔒 Goal of the Reform
BDDK states that the primary purpose is to enhance customer safety and prevent night-time digital fraud attempts, which peak during these hours.
The measure also aims to reduce attacks involving fake banking apps and phishing websites.
🏦 What Customers Should Do
- ✔️ Check if you have Turkey's new chip-enabled ID card
- ✔️ Ensure your smartphone supports NFC
- ✔️ Enable two-factor authentication in mobile banking
- ✔️ Avoid clicking on links in SMS or messenger apps claiming to "activate your card"
These new security measures represent Turkey's ongoing efforts to combat digital banking fraud and protect consumers in an increasingly digital financial landscape.
