The saffron harvest started in the Turkish province of Karabuk.
Normally, the entire harvest takes place within a month, but farmers started earlier this year because the weather conditions were favorable. That's why the harvest will take 1½ months this time.
It is very difficult to harvest saffron: 160,000 flowers are needed
to gain 1 kilogram of saffron. Saffron is very much in demand, it is e.g. used in various fields, such as the kitchen, cosmetics and medicine.
The cost of saffron is $ 5,000 per kilogram: Turkey uses the flowers for its own market and for sale abroad.
