Significant Discoveries

The excavation team, led by archaeologist Faris Demir from Osmaniye Korkut Ata University, reports that the newly discovered pieces include a relief depicting an elderly philosopher — considered the most significant find of the season.

According to Demir, previous excavations at Kastabala also revealed masks representing tragedy and comedy, as well as architectural elements belonging to the theater's stage building.

"These discoveries show that the theater was not only a venue for performances but also a cultural center where philosophical and literary discussions took place."

Cultural Significance

The masks feature influences from both Eastern and Western artistic traditions, reflecting Kastabala's role as a cultural crossroads in the Roman Empire.

Demir noted that the growing collection of theatrical masks will support restoration efforts at the ancient theater, helping preserve the site for future generations.
