Three Flamingos Visit Abana Creek Amid Harsh Weather

Rare Flamingo Visit Delights Northern Turkey Amid Harsh Weather

Amid harsh weather conditions in the Black Sea region, three flamingos have landed in Abana Creek in the northern province of Kastamonu, attracting great attention from locals and nature enthusiasts.

The rare sight drew both residents and wildlife observers. Known in Turkey as "allı turna", the flamingos were seen resting in a safe section of the creek, creating picturesque scenes against the natural landscape.

Many locals, seeing the birds in this area for the first time, captured the moment on their phones, while wildlife photographers documented the unusual event.

"Flamingos can change their migration routes depending on food availability and resting needs," explained nature photographer Serhat Çakıcı. He recalled that a single young flamingo had been spotted in previous years but emphasized the uniqueness of this visit: "Heavy snowfall and harsh weather across the region have turned Abana into a safe haven for flamingos."

Iconic Birds Find Temporary Refuge

With their striking pink plumage, flamingos are among Turkey’s most iconic bird species. While their appearance in Abana Creek is rare for locals, the country remains one of the world’s key sites for flamingo breeding and wintering.

Key facts about flamingos in Turkey:

  • Primary breeding grounds are located in the salt lakes of the Central and Western regions.
  • They are a protected species, and their habitats are under conservation.
  • Unexpected visits like this one highlight the importance of preserving all wetland ecosystems.

Important: Locals and visitors are reminded to observe the birds from a distance without disturbing them. The creek's role as a safe haven depends on minimal human interference.

Note for Photographers: Using drones or making loud noises to get a reaction from the birds is harmful and can disrupt their critical rest period during migration.

The event serves as a beautiful reminder of nature's adaptability and the unexpected wonders it can present, even during the most challenging weather conditions.
