Istanbul Airports Use Ornithologists for Bird Strike Safety

Ornithologists Deployed at Istanbul Airports to Enhance Flight Safety

ISTANBUL — Türkiye has implemented a pioneering aviation safety program by deploying professional ornithologists at Istanbul’s major airports. Their primary mission is to proactively monitor and manage bird activity to mitigate risks to aircraft during takeoff and landing.

Scientific Approach to Wildlife Management

The program focuses on scientifically monitoring and controlling wildlife around runways and air corridors, with a firm commitment to preserving the local ecosystem. Ornithologists study bird species, flight patterns, migration routes, and behavior to understand what attracts birds to airport zones and to develop effective, non-lethal prevention strategies.

This approach ensures uninterrupted airport operations while maintaining environmental balance. All methods used are exclusively non-lethal and environmentally friendly.

24/7 Operations at Sabiha Gökçen Airport

At Sabiha Gökçen International Airport, a dedicated team of 84 personnel manages wildlife, including a biologist and an ornithologist. Specialized teams operate around the clock, tracking animal movements, recording behavioral patterns, and compiling detailed data reports.

Key tasks of the field teams include:

  • Regular observation and identification of bird species.
  • Tracking seasonal migration patterns.
  • Actively mapping high-risk zones within airport boundaries.
  • Using collected scientific data to develop long-term risk-reduction solutions.

Non-Lethal Deterrent Technology

The program relies on a suite of advanced, humane tools to deter wildlife without causing harm or displacing animals from their natural habitats. These include:

  • Handheld laser deterrents and propane-powered sound cannons.
  • Acoustic devices with solar panels and speakers.
  • Ultrasonic deterrent systems.
  • Patrol vehicles, including 4x4 off-road and "follow-me" cars, featuring domestically produced TOGG models.

Critical Airports on Migration Routes

Istanbul’s airports are uniquely positioned along major bird migration paths, making this program essential for safety.

  • Istanbul Airport (European side): One of the world's largest aviation hubs, serving tens of millions of passengers annually as a major intercontinental transit center.
  • Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (Asian side): A key hub for domestic and international travel, particularly for low-cost carriers.

The location of both airports makes professional wildlife management a critical component of aviation safety planning, aiming to significantly reduce bird strike incidents through science and technology.
