Türkiye Deploys Patriot Air Defense System in Eastern Malatya Amid Regional Tensions
ISTANBUL, 10 March 2026 – Türkiye is preparing a Patriot air defense system for operational readiness in eastern Malatya province as part of coordinated measures with NATO to protect the country's airspace amid rising regional tensions.
The National Defense Ministry stated that the Turkish Armed Forces remain "fully committed to ensuring the security of our country and our citizens."
"In light of recent regional developments, necessary measures are being taken to secure our borders and airspace, in consultation with NATO and our Allies."
The ministry confirmed that NATO has also reinforced its regional defense posture. "A Patriot system is currently in Malatya and being prepared for operational readiness to support the protection of our airspace," the official statement read.
Türkiye will continue close coordination with NATO on defense and security matters, aiming to maintain regional stability amid the escalating crisis.
Regional Context: Escalating Conflict
The announcement comes against a backdrop of sharply heightened tensions following joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, which have reportedly killed around 1,300 people. In retaliation, Iran has launched drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and several Gulf countries that host US military assets.
Iran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz on March 1, a strategic waterway critical to global energy supplies. The strait handles approximately 20% of global liquefied natural gas trade and facilitates the transit of an estimated 20 million barrels of oil daily.
