Turkey and Germany Deepen Strategic and Economic Ties
Turkey and Germany Strengthen Strategic Partnership
Turkey and Germany are strengthening their strategic partnership, according to a statement by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. During an official visit to Germany, Fidan held talks with German Foreign Minister Joachim Wadeful. Both leaders expressed their commitment to deepen bilateral cooperation across political, economic, and strategic areas.
A New Wave of Turkey–Germany Cooperation
Fidan emphasized that relations between Turkey and Germany are now moving “with new momentum and a renewed spirit.” Both sides plan to actively develop dialogue, coordinate on key sectors, and continue collaboration despite global political uncertainty and crises.
“There is a strong will to further develop Turkey-Germany relations, as well as Turkey-EU relations. We are taking all necessary steps to strengthen cooperation in these challenging times,” Fidan said.
Economy and Investment
Economic cooperation remains a key pillar of the partnership. Germany continues to be Turkey's largest trading partner in Europe and one of its major global markets.
- Bilateral trade volume is growing and could increase from $50 billion to $60 billion.
- Expansion of mutual investments is planned.
- In early 2026, the Turkey-Germany Strategic Dialogue will meet, along with a forum on energy and mining, expected to boost economic ties further.
Fidan also highlighted opportunities in high-tech and emerging sectors:
- Renewable energy
- Artificial intelligence
- Digitalization
- Innovation
Turkish Diaspora in Germany
Fidan acknowledged the significant contribution of the Turkish community in Germany to the country’s economic, scientific, cultural, and sports spheres.
“The achievements of the Turkish diaspora are a source of pride for both Turkey and Germany,” he said, noting their role in strengthening bilateral ties.
Turkey and the EU: Membership Prospects
The Turkish foreign minister reaffirmed that Turkey fully meets EU membership criteria, noting that delays are due to processes within the Union itself.
“If you want to join the club, you need to meet its rules. The problem is not Turkey — currently, no new chapters are being opened for discussion.”
Turkey hopes to resume negotiations and advance issues such as the Customs Union, visa liberalization, and simplified Schengen visa procedures for Turkish citizens.
Regional and European Security
Fidan discussed European security issues with his German counterpart, stressing the need to include Turkey in the Security Action Program (SAFE) and highlighting Turkey's strategic role in defense industries.
He also addressed regional crises, including Syria, Gaza, and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, emphasizing Turkey's readiness to continue a mediating role and host direct talks in Istanbul.
Conclusion
Hakan Fidan's visit to Germany sent a strong signal about Ankara's commitment to strengthening bilateral relations while advancing its interests in Europe. Turkey reaffirms its strategic role in security, economy, and international diplomacy, showing readiness for constructive dialogue with EU and NATO partners.
