Pope Leo XIV emphasized Türkiye's strategic and cultural importance during a joint address with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Ankara, highlighting the country's key role in the Mediterranean region and in shaping the global future.

Türkiye's Role in a Changing World

Speaking at the Presidential Complex, the pontiff praised Türkiye for its ability to embrace and protect internal diversity — a value he described as essential for stability in the region.

"You have an important place in both the present and future of the Mediterranean, and of the whole world," Pope Leo XIV said, stressing that Türkiye's geopolitical position and cultural heritage give it a unique responsibility in promoting peace and cooperation.

Warning About Rising Global Tensions

The pope also delivered a stark warning about escalating conflicts worldwide, stating that humanity is facing a critical moment.

He noted that after the devastation of two world wars — which led to the creation of major international institutions — the world is again experiencing heightened instability.

According to Pope Leo XIV, today's conflicts are "fueled by prevailing strategies of economic and military power," creating conditions that could pave the way for a global confrontation.

"We must in no way give in to this," he said, underscoring the urgent need for dialogue, diplomacy and shared moral responsibility.

A Call for Dialogue and Cooperation

The visit of Pope Leo XIV, part of his first international tour that includes Türkiye and Lebanon, reinforces the Vatican's support for interfaith dialogue and regional peacebuilding.

His address in Ankara highlighted Türkiye's role as a bridge between regions, religions and cultures — and as a country that can contribute significantly to global stability.
