BERLIN, 10 March 2026 – Cem Özdemir, a leading figure of the German Greens, has secured a historic victory in the Baden-Württemberg state elections on March 8. He is set to become the first state premier of Turkish heritage in Germany.

From "Gastarbeiter" Roots to Political Prominence

Born in December 1965 in Bad Urach, Baden-Württemberg, Özdemir is the son of Turkish "Gastarbeiter" – a textile worker and a seamstress who contributed to Germany's post-war economic boom. Özdemir took German nationality in 1983 and pursued education and social work, supported by teachers who encouraged his studies.

Since 1994, he has been a national political figure, serving as a federal MP, co-leading the Greens federally from 2008 to 2018, and holding the post of Agriculture Minister under Chancellor Olaf Scholz's SPD-led government. He also served in the European Parliament from 2004 to 2009.

Historic Election Victory

In the March 8 election for Baden-Württemberg's state parliament, Özdemir led the Greens to nearly 32% of the vote, narrowly beating the center-right CDU. His victory caps a decades-long political career and reflects his strong name recognition and experience in campaigning, particularly compared to his main opponent, the relatively unknown CDU candidate Manuel Hagel.

Experience and Expertise

Özdemir emphasized his foreign policy expertise and strong network in televised debates, noting that his experience could help the region's key industries, including Porsche and Mercedes-Benz, navigate global economic challenges.

A Symbol of Integration and Opportunity

Özdemir's journey from the child of immigrant workers to state premier highlights the possibilities for integration and upward mobility in Germany. He identifies himself as a "Swabian Anatolian", embracing both his Turkish roots and his German upbringing.

His election marks a milestone for Germany's political landscape, showcasing growing diversity and representation at the highest regional levels.
