Explore Ottoman Tile Art in Topkapi Palace's New Gallery
New Tile Art Gallery Opens at Topkapi Palace
A new gallery dedicated to the exquisite craft of Ottoman tilework has opened within the historic confines of Istanbul's Topkapi Palace. Located in the recently restored Mabeyn section, the Tile Art Gallery occupies a corridor known as the "Mabeyn Yolu" (Mabeyn Path), which connects the Mabeyn with the Harem-i Hümayun.
"The Mabeyn Path is one of the most mysterious areas of Topkapi Palace. It was the Sultan's private passage, bridging his official chambers with the private world of the harem. For many years, this historical artery was closed to visitors," said Professor Yasin Yıldız, Head of the National Palaces Administration.
A Journey Through Ottoman Tile Art
The restoration project has carefully preserved the authentic architecture of the corridor while transforming it into a modern museum space. The exhibition is designed as a single route, guiding visitors through the evolution of Turkish tile art over three centuries:
- The zenith of 16th-century Iznik tiles, renowned for their vibrant cobalt reds and emerald greens.
- The transition to 18th-century Kütahya works, which show distinct influences from European artistic styles.
Highlights of the Collection
The gallery displays approximately 250 tiles, many of which were previously held in storage and are now presented to the public for the first time. Key pieces include:
- Tiles featuring classic Hatay patterns and intricate floral motifs.
- Rare landscape and figurative scenes.
- Commemorative tiles bearing the names of Ottoman sultans, from Osman Gazi to Selim II.
- Historic fragments inscribed with text from the 11th-century Arabic poem, "Qasida al-Munfarija".
Visitor Information The Mabeyn Yolu Tile Art Gallery is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Important Note The gallery, like Topkapi Palace itself, is closed every Tuesday.
A Restoration Success
The opening marks a significant achievement in cultural heritage preservation, turning a long-hidden architectural element into a dedicated space that narrates the rich story of Ottoman decorative arts. The gallery offers a unique opportunity to walk a historic sultan's path while admiring one of the empire's most celebrated artistic traditions.
