Tours Threaten Endangered Mediterranean Monk Seals in Antalya
Tours Threaten Endangered Mediterranean Monk Seals in Antalya 🦭⚠️
Illegal tourist excursions into the rare breeding caves of Mediterranean monk seals have sparked concern in Antalya. Conservationists warn that these intrusions directly endanger one of the world's most critically endangered marine mammals.
🎥 Disturbing Evidence
Recent videos, allegedly filmed by a tour operator, show divers entering the seal reserve and a frightened monk seal fleeing its resting spot. The footage, which circulated in private messaging groups, was reported to the Mediterranean Monk Seal Research Group (SAD-AFAG), which passed the case to the national parks authority for investigation.
📊 Conservation Progress at Risk
Once numbering around 700, the Mediterranean monk seal population has grown to about 900 thanks to conservation efforts. However, the species remains highly vulnerable, and the caves are legally protected as safe refuges from human disturbance.
🗣️ Expert Concerns
According to SAD-AFAG coordinator Jem Orkun Kıraç, the tour operator had been guiding groups—mostly Russian tourists—into the caves near Gazipaşa-Alanya for about two years, sometimes prompting tourists to return on their own.
"These animals are naturally shy and avoid humans. Human intrusion forces them into hiding, and entering their caves disturbs them in their last safe haven." – Jem Orkun Kıraç, SAD-AFAG Coordinator
🚨 Conservation Emergency
The situation represents a serious threat to decades of conservation work and highlights the need for stricter enforcement of protected areas and penalties for illegal tour operations.
