Türkiye's Recycling Revolution: Turning 25 Billion Packages into $612M Annually

How the Deposit Management System is driving environmental protection and economic growth through innovative waste management

Türkiye's Deposit Management System (DMS) represents a groundbreaking approach to sustainable development, setting an ambitious goal to recycle over 25 billion beverage packages annually. This transformative initiative is projected to inject approximately €520 million ($612 million) into the national economy while creating a cleaner environment for future generations.

"This system is more than just recycling—it's a fundamental shift in our relationship with resources. We're building a circular economy that benefits both our environment and our economy."

— Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change

How the System Works

Implemented under the leadership of the Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Ministry and championed by First Lady Emine Erdoğan, the system creates a closed-loop cycle for beverage containers. Consumers participate through a simple yet effective process:

  • Purchase: Buy a beverage in a package marked with the official DOA (Deposit-Bearing Package) logo.
  • Return: After consumption, return the empty container to an automated Deposit Return Machine.
  • Refund: Receive a voucher or digital refund of your deposit.

Nationwide Implementation Strategy

The system was strategically launched in pilot regions to optimize operations before national expansion. The successful pilot programs in Sakarya province and Kızılcahamam district (Ankara) paved the way for broader implementation.

Current Deployment Cities

Deposit return machines are now actively serving consumers in these major urban centers:

Erzurum, Mersin, Gaziantep, Samsun, Izmir, Konya

Environmental & Economic Impact

The Deposit Management System creates a virtuous cycle with multiple cascading benefits:

  1. Pollution Reduction: Diverts billions of packages from landfills and natural environments annually.
  2. Resource Conservation: Significantly reduces demand for virgin materials like petroleum and bauxite.
  3. Energy Efficiency: Recycling aluminum saves 95% energy compared to primary production.
  4. Economic Growth: Creates green jobs in collection, processing, and manufacturing sectors.

Public Participation is Key: The system's success depends on consumer engagement. Each returned container contributes to Türkiye's environmental targets.

Part of the Broader Zero Waste Vision

The DMS is a critical operational component of Türkiye's comprehensive Zero Waste Initiative, spearheaded by First Lady Emine Erdoğan. The Istanbul-based Zero Waste Foundation provides strategic support, ensuring alignment with national sustainability goals.

Compliance Notice for Businesses: Manufacturers must ensure all eligible packages display the official DOA logo. Non-compliance may result in penalties.

By integrating technology, economic incentives, and environmental policy, Türkiye's Deposit Management System presents a replicable model for sustainable development. It demonstrates that ecological responsibility and economic prosperity are mutually reinforcing.
