ANKARA – Türkiye has officially registered 10,503 monumental trees and 319 caves across the country, ensuring their protection and maintenance, the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change told Anadolu Agency.

Categories of Monumental Trees

Monumental trees in Türkiye are categorized into four types:

  • Historical: trees that witnessed a significant event or figure.
  • Mystical: trees revered by locals through religious beliefs.
  • Folkloric: trees connected to regional customs or traditions.
  • Dimensional: trees notable for their age, trunk diameter, crown spread, or height.

Tree Rehabilitation and Protection Measures

Registered monumental trees undergo careful rehabilitation, which includes:

  • Removing harmful fungi, mistletoe, ivy, dead branches, and foreign objects.
  • Treating infections and coating cut surfaces with grafting paste to prevent decay.
  • Protecting roots by removing nearby concrete or asphalt and enriching the soil with nutrients.

Cave Conservation Efforts

Nationwide conservation efforts also focus on protecting caves. This includes both officially protected sites and lesser-known caves awaiting registration, raising the total number of registered caves to 319.

The Ministry emphasized that these efforts aim to preserve Türkiye's natural and cultural heritage for future generations.
