Turkey Introduces New Rules for IBAN Transfers
Turkey Introduces New Rules for IBAN Transfers
Starting this year, Turkey has implemented new regulations for bank transfers over 20,000 TRY via mobile or internet banking.
🔐 Additional Identity Verification Required
Transfers exceeding the threshold will now require identity verification using a chip-enabled ID and NFC technology. Banks will prompt users to scan their new ID cards with a mobile phone to complete the transaction.
This applies to both outgoing IBAN transfers and internal transfers above the limit. The measure aligns with BRSA (Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency) directives to strengthen digital authentication.
⏰ Nighttime Transfers May Be Limited
Transfers without proper verification may be restricted between 22:00 and 06:00, affecting late‑night transactions. This includes:
- IBAN transfers initiated outside business hours
- Mobile banking payments to third parties
- Internet banking transfers above ₺20,000
If a user has already verified their identity with a chip ID, the night restriction may be lifted. However, temporary limits apply to those who have not yet updated their ID.
⚠️ Old ID Cards Should Be Updated
Authorities recommend that citizens with older ID cards replace them with the new versions to avoid any interruptions in banking services.
🧾 Key points at a glance
- threshold: 20,000 TRY — applies to mobile & internet banking
- verification: chip ID + NFC (new Turkish ID card)
- night window: 22:00–06:00 — restricted if unverified
“These measures aim to increase security and prevent fraud in digital banking, ensuring safer transactions for users across Turkey.” — BRSA statement, March 2025
📇 How to get the new chip ID
Turkish citizens can apply at any district population directorate (Nüfus Müdürlüğü) with a biometric photo and application fee. The new ID includes an NFC chip that stores identity data required for bank verification.
