Istanbul Schools Launch Campaign to Reduce Slang in Classrooms
Schools in Istanbul’s Beşiktaş district have launched a new initiative aimed at reducing the use of slang and abrasive language among students, from kindergarten through high school. The program, encompassing 217 public schools, focuses on cultivating respectful communication habits through positive reinforcement rather than punishment.
Shaping Habits Through Awareness, Not Discipline
The initiative encourages students to replace casual or dismissive expressions with more polite and complete forms of speech. A key component is training teachers to explain the social and emotional impact of language.
"Instead of simply saying 'don't say that,' we are equipped to discuss how certain words and tones can be hurtful or exclusionary. It's about building awareness, not fear of punishment," explained one participating teacher.
Project coordinator Merve Hacıabdurrahmanoğlu, a doctoral researcher and clinical psychologist, reports promising early signs. "Our observations indicate positive changes not only in the students' language choices but also in their overall classroom behavior and peer interactions," she stated.
Creative Engagement and Observed Benefits
To embed these values, schools are employing creative methods:
- Drama workshops where students act out different communication scenarios.
- Art projects centered on themes of respect and empathy.
- Student-designed posters displayed in school corridors to promote positive dialogue.
According to teacher feedback, many students have quickly noticed the practical benefits. Adopting a calmer and more respectful way of speaking has led to tangible improvements in their relationships with both peers and authority figures.
Key Guidelines for Students
The campaign provides clear examples for students to follow. For instance, a dismissive slang response like "N'apim?" (a truncated, casual form of "What am I going to do?") is encouraged to be replaced with the more complete and polite "Ne yapayım?".
Goal: The ultimate goal is to foster an inclusive school environment where respectful communication is the norm.
Method: The program relies on education, creativity, and consistent positive modeling from educators.
Not a Punitive Measure: It is crucial to understand this is not a strict disciplinary crackdown, but a holistic behavioral development project.
