Snow in Taurus Mountains Ends Alanya's Drought, Refills Reservoirs
Alanya’s Reservoirs Refill as Heavy Snowfall Brings Hope After Drought
Alanya, January 2026
After three consecutive years of drought, heavy snowfall in the Taurus Mountains between Alanya and Taşkent has brought renewed hope for the recovery of the region’s water resources. In some mountainous areas, the snow cover has reached depths of up to one meter, signaling a much-needed replenishment of underground water reserves.
Photos shared on social media by Kuttusi Demir captured the attention of local residents, showing the Taurus Mountains—Alanya’s main natural water source—blanketed in snow. The long-awaited precipitation followed intense rainfall, transforming the highlands into a striking winter landscape.
Key Observations:
- Location: Taurus Mountains along the Taşkent–Alanya route
- Snow depth: Between 30 cm and 100 cm, depending on altitude
- Impact: Snowmelt is expected to significantly recharge groundwater and reservoirs, providing vital water supplies for the summer season
While Alanya’s coastline continues to enjoy sunny weather, the mountain peaks above the city are experiencing the harsh yet majestic face of winter. The contrast offers not only a visual spectacle but also a strong sign of relief for agriculture, water management, and long-term sustainability in the region.
"Sustained snow cover in the Taurus Mountains plays a critical role in securing Alanya’s water supply, making this winter’s conditions especially encouraging," note local water management experts.
The snowfall is a natural reservoir, storing water that will gradually be released during the spring and summer months. This process is crucial for refilling the Dimçayı and Alara Dam reservoirs, which are vital for the region's irrigation and domestic water needs.
