Tourists Flock to Turkey’s “Bride Rock” That Seems to Defy Physics

Turkey continues to reveal breathtaking natural wonders, with the latest captivating discovery in the Black Sea region. In Giresun, a stunning rock formation known as “Bride Rock” is drawing global attention for its appearance of defying gravity, reminiscent of the floating mountains in the film Avatar. Steeped in local legend, this mysterious site is becoming a must-see destination for travelers.

A Legend Etched in Stone

Located in the Tashhan area of Syvaci village near Giresun, the site features two massive rock formations. The upper rock creates a surreal optical illusion, appearing to balance precariously "on nothing."

The Legend: Local lore tells of a beautiful young woman forced into marriage with a wealthy but unloved man. Heartbroken, she prayed on her wedding day to be turned to stone rather than proceed. Her prayer was answered, transforming her and her horse into the two giant rocks that stand today. Many claim to see the silhouette of a woman in a wedding dress in the stone.

Official Development and Preservation Efforts

The site's potential is now being formally recognized. Emrah Koç, head of Syvaci village, confirmed that the Special Provincial Administration has designated the area an official tourist zone.

  • Plans include constructing a modern viewing platform and improving visitor facilities.
  • Environmental Note: Authorities warn that uncontrolled visits have led to pollution, and efforts are underway to preserve the site's natural beauty while developing sustainable tourism.

This development is expected to bring significant opportunities to the local community.

How to Visit Bride Rock

Reaching this natural marvel is part of the adventure through Turkey's picturesque landscapes. Here are the primary travel options:

By Air (Recommended): The fastest and most comfortable route is via daily flights from Istanbul to Ordu-Giresun Airport (OGU). The flight takes about 1 hour 30 minutes. From the airport, take a shuttle bus or taxi to Giresun city, then proceed to Syvaci village.

By Bus: Intercity buses from Istanbul to Giresun take approximately 12–14 hours. Modern coaches offer amenities like air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and power outlets. From Giresun's bus station, use local transport or a taxi to reach Syvaci village.

Travel Tip: Combine your visit with other incredible sights in the region, such as the Sumela Monastery or the tea plantations of Rize, to create an unforgettable journey through Turkey's diverse beauty.
