Türkiye’s Parliament Approves Bill on PKK Disarmament

🇹🇷 Türkiye’s parliament has approved a bill providing a legal framework for the disarmament and dissolution of the PKK, which is banned in Türkiye and designated as a terrorist organization by the Turkish authorities.

The bill was approved following 12 hours of debate and article-by-article voting, according to Turkish media reports.

The legislation was submitted by the ruling Justice and Development Party, led by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and was signed by around 360 lawmakers. It consists of 12 articles and establishes a legal framework for the PKK dissolution process.

📌 The bill will enter into force after it is signed by the president and published in the official government gazette, Resmî Gazete.

🕊️ Background to the Disarmament Process

The PKK dissolution process began in February 2025 following a call by its leader Abdullah Öcalan, who is serving a life sentence in Türkiye for terrorism-related crimes.

In May 2025, the PKK held a congress and announced its decision to dissolve itself and end its nearly 50-year conflict with Türkiye.

The disarmament process formally began on July 11 in northern Iraq. A special parliamentary commission was subsequently established in Türkiye to oversee the process.
