Turkey Tourism 2025: 95% of Visitors in 6 Cities

Turkey Tourism 2025: 95% of Visitors in 6 Cities

🇹🇷 Turkey Tourism 2025: 95% of All Tourists Concentrated in Just Six Cities

According to Tourism Databank and an analysis by Erol Karabulut, tourism in Türkiye remains heavily concentrated in a small number of destinations. Data from the first nine months of 2025 shows that nearly 95% of all foreign tourists stayed in only six cities.

Despite long-term plans to expand tourism across the country, international visitor flows continue to cluster around popular coastal and metropolitan areas.

📊 The Six Cities That Attract Almost All Tourists

From January to September 2025, 95% of foreign tourists stayed in:

  • Antalya
  • Alanya
  • Muğla
  • Istanbul
  • Izmir
  • Aydın

Turkey has 81 provinces, yet only a handful receive the overwhelming majority of travelers. Alanya, with its beaches, historic sites and modern infrastructure, remains a major magnet for visitors. Antalya and Muğla continue to dominate the coastal segment, while Istanbul and Izmir attract tourists with their culture and urban attractions.

Key Finding: 87% of all overnight stays occur in just 23 districts out of the 922 districts nationwide.

⚠️ Concentration of Tourism Creates Regional Imbalance

Experts warn that the ongoing concentration contradicts Türkiye's regional development goals.

Mass tourism remains tied to traditional coastal and urban centers, limiting economic diversification and slowing growth in less-visited regions.

Additionally, the rapid rise of tourist facilities in already popular hubs increases pressure on infrastructure and intensifies competition among tourism operators.

So far, the government's objective to "spread tourism across the entire country" remains more aspirational than practical.

🧭 Outlook

Türkiye continues to be one of the world's top beach tourism destinations, with cities such as Alanya, Antalya, and Muğla maintaining their dominance.

However, achieving more balanced regional tourism will require greater investment in emerging destinations, improved infrastructure, and stronger promotion of lesser-known regions.

📌 For Travelers

Despite the concentration, Türkiye offers enormous variety — from the golden beaches of Alanya to the historic streets of Istanbul — ensuring that every type of visitor can find the experience they seek.

While tourism remains concentrated in select cities, each destination offers unique experiences that continue to attract millions of visitors annually to Türkiye.
