Turkey Cruise Passenger Numbers Reach 16-Year High

Turkey’s Cruise Tourism Hits 16-Year High as Passenger Numbers Surge

Turkey’s cruise tourism sector has recorded its strongest performance in 16 years, driven by a sharp increase in passenger arrivals during March and the first quarter of 2026.

The growth reflects rising global demand for cruise travel and Turkey’s strengthening position as a key destination in Mediterranean cruise routes.

Strong Performance in March

In March alone, 26 cruise ships docked at Turkish ports, carrying 41,039 passengers. This represents a 4.9% increase compared to the same month last year.

The monthly rise contributed significantly to the overall positive performance of the first quarter.

In the first three months of 2026, Turkish ports welcomed 56 cruise ships and 93,787 passengers in total.

Istanbul Leads Cruise Traffic

Istanbul remained the leading cruise destination in Turkey, maintaining its dominance in passenger arrivals and ship traffic.

Between January and March, the city welcomed 18 cruise ships and approximately 35,800 passengers, making it the country’s busiest cruise hub.

Istanbul continues to play a central role in Turkey’s maritime tourism sector thanks to its strategic location and strong international connections.

Key Port Destinations

Other major Turkish ports also recorded strong cruise activity during the same period.

  • Izmir (Alsancak Port): 13 ships and 27,467 passengers
  • Kusadasi: 17 ships and 22,682 passengers

March Distribution Across Ports

In March, Istanbul once again led cruise arrivals, followed by Kusadasi and Izmir.

  • Istanbul: 8 ships and 13,307 passengers
  • Kusadasi: 7 ships and 12,191 passengers
  • Izmir Alsancak: 5 ships and 9,723 passengers
  • Other regional ports: 6 ships and 5,818 passengers

Outlook for 2026

The strong start to the year highlights Turkey’s growing importance in global cruise tourism and its expanding role in Mediterranean maritime routes.

With consistent growth across Istanbul, Izmir, and Aegean coastal destinations, the sector is expected to maintain strong momentum throughout 2026.
