Lavender Fields in Tekirdağ Become a Popular Day Trip Destination from Istanbul
This summer, lavender fields in the northwestern province of Tekirdağ are attracting an increasing number of visitors. The majority of guests come from Istanbul, choosing this scenic rural area for a short escape from the noise and pace of the metropolis.
Located in the Süleymanpaşa district, the lavender fields have become one of the region’s most popular seasonal attractions. During the blooming period at the beginning of summer, the landscape turns into vivid shades of purple, creating a strong draw for nature lovers, photographers, and weekend travelers.
In Turkey, this trend is increasingly referred to as “purple tourism,” a growing form of rural travel.
Visitors walk through fragrant lavender fields, take photoshoots, and record videos against the blooming scenery. The flow of tourists from Istanbul and nearby regions is especially noticeable.
One of the lavender farm owners, Kamil Turgut, noted that interest in the fields has been particularly strong this season.
“Right now, we are welcoming a large number of visitors, especially from Istanbul. They leave very satisfied. This season will last until the end of July — around 45–50 days of strong tourist activity. After that, we will begin lavender harvesting and essential oil production.”
Beyond its tourism appeal, lavender cultivation also has significant agricultural value. The plant is used for producing essential oils, cosmetics, and aromatic products, creating additional opportunities for local businesses.
The blooming season is expected to last until the end of July, during which the Süleymanpaşa lavender fields will welcome thousands more visitors.
The growing popularity of this destination strengthens Tekirdağ’s reputation as an emerging hub for nature tourism and a convenient getaway for Istanbul residents seeking a short break from city life.
