Horse Heritage Comes to Life in Cappadocia: A Unique Museum Exhibition Opens in Ürgüp
A new cultural exhibition dedicated to the rich equestrian heritage of Cappadocia has been unveiled at the museum in the Ürgüp district of Nevşehir Province. The region, historically known as the “land of beautiful horses,” now offers visitors a deeper and more immersive look into its ancient connection with horses through a carefully curated collection.
The exhibition, presented at the Horse Museum of Erhan Ayata, which opened to visitors last year, has quickly become a notable attraction for both local and international tourists. It highlights the role of horses in shaping the cultural and historical identity of Cappadocia and contributes significantly to the region’s growing cultural tourism appeal.

The museum functions as a living archive of equestrian history, bringing together over 450 items from the private collection of Erhan Ayata. The exhibition includes sculptures, paintings, photographs, traditional artifacts, and contemporary artworks, all illustrating the deep relationship between humans and horses across different eras.
This diverse presentation allows visitors to experience the evolution of horse culture not only as a historical subject but also as an artistic and emotional narrative.
In addition, a special photography exhibition by Zeynep Sezerman focuses on wild horses of the region, adding a natural and expressive dimension to the overall display.
🟨 From Private Collection to Public Heritage
The museum is operated by the Ürgüp Municipality in cooperation with the Cappadocia Area Administration. Its main goal is to strengthen cultural tourism while preserving and promoting the region’s unique heritage.
According to Ürgüp Mayor Ali Ertuğrul Bul, horse culture has existed in the region for thousands of years. However, until recently, there was no dedicated cultural space focusing specifically on this heritage.
The idea to establish the museum emerged after collaboration with collector Erhan Ayata, whose extensive private collection of 450 pieces was selected for public exhibition.
Following this decision, a historic building was rapidly restored and transformed into a modern exhibition space that now houses hundreds of artifacts related to horses and equestrian traditions.

Museum director Ali Çuhadar reports a steady increase in visitor interest since the exhibition opened. The museum attracts not only horse enthusiasts but also travelers eager to explore the cultural depth of Cappadocia.
