Bosphorus Museum in Istanbul: What to See and When to Visit
🌊 Bosphorus Museum in Istanbul: Exhibition and Opening Hours
A new Bosphorus Museum has opened in Türkiye. Located on the second floor of the Kabataş transfer center in Istanbul, the museum is dedicated to the history of the strait, its shores and the lives of people who have been connected to the Bosphorus for centuries.
The History of the Bosphorus Through Maps, Photos and Art
The opening exhibition, “Mehtabı Sürükledik Sularda: Bir Boğaziçi Hikâyesi”, tells the story of life along the Bosphorus and how it has changed over time.
The exhibition features historical maps, engravings, photographs, postcards, books, periodicals and works of art.
Curator Ali Kayaalp brought together materials from the Atatürk Library, the municipal art collection and private collections.
Visitors can see what the waterfront mansions, piers, leisure areas, boats and ferries once looked like, while also following how migration, industrialization, population growth and urban development changed the shores of the strait during the 20th century.
Why Was the Museum Opened in Kabataş?
Kabataş has long played an important role in Istanbul's transport network. Today, the transfer center connects several types of public transport, while its viewing areas offer visitors a chance to see the Bosphorus after exploring the exhibition.
According to Mahir Polat, Deputy Secretary General of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, work on the museum took almost four years.
Municipal representatives, members of the arts community and local residents attended the opening ceremony.
When Can You Visit the Bosphorus Museum?
Admission to the exhibition is free until April 11, 2027.
According to the municipality, the exhibition is open from 10:00 to 19:00 every day except Monday.
At the opening ceremony, Deputy Mayor Nuri Aslan also announced plans to set admission to municipal museums at 1 Turkish lira for Turkish citizens. The proposal still needs to be submitted to the municipal council for consideration.
He also separately announced a planned admission price of 1 lira for the Şerefiye Cistern.
The Museum and the Modern Bosphorus
The Bosphorus Museum offers visitors an opportunity to see the strait not only as one of Istanbul's best-known landmarks, but also as an important part of everyday city life.
After exploring the history of the Bosphorus inside the exhibition halls, visitors can head to the Kabataş waterfront and see the modern view of the strait, comparing it with how the area looked during different periods of history.
The free exhibition will run until April 11, 2027, making it possible to combine a museum visit with a walk along the Kabataş waterfront and views of the Bosphorus.
