Türkiye Aims for Greater Independence in Space

🚀 Türkiye is building its own spaceport in Somalia, according to Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır.

🇸🇴 Why Somalia?

The site’s location near the equator would allow Türkiye to make greater use of Earth’s rotation, which could significantly reduce the cost of rocket launches.

“We hope this project will be completed quickly, allowing Türkiye to launch satellites and spacecraft developed with its own capabilities using its own rockets from its own spaceport.”

🛰️ What Else Is Planned?

  • 📌 Space technology park: A large-scale cluster will be established at Middle East Technical University. It will bring together public institutions and private companies to conduct research and development within a shared infrastructure.
  • 📌 International space stations: Türkiye plans to participate in the development of future international space stations not only as an observer, but also as a developer and manufacturer of technological components.
