Türkiye Launches New Vessel Monitoring System in Northern Cyprus

Türkiye will officially commission a new Vessel Traffic Monitoring System in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus on July 20, 2026. The project is designed to enhance maritime safety, monitor vessel movements, and strengthen Türkiye's operational capabilities in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that all construction work, equipment installation, and software integration for the Eastern Mediterranean Vessel Traffic Services Project have been completed. The system will begin full operation on July 20.

Comprehensive Monitoring of Maritime Traffic

According to the minister, the new system will provide continuous monitoring of vessel traffic within the maritime jurisdiction areas of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

"We have completed the construction works, equipment installations and software integration processes for the project. By commissioning the system on July 20, we will begin effectively monitoring vessel traffic in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus' maritime jurisdiction areas," Abdulkadir Uraloğlu said.

The monitoring network is intended to improve navigation safety while supporting maritime coordination between Türkiye and Northern Cyprus.

Domestic Technology at the Core of the Project

The minister emphasized that the project relies entirely on domestically developed software and critical equipment, reinforcing Türkiye's technological independence in maritime traffic management.

The project is being implemented by the General Directorate of Maritime Affairs, while the main contractor is Turkish defense and technology company Havelsan.

Advanced Monitoring Capabilities

The Vessel Traffic Monitoring System combines multiple technologies to provide uninterrupted surveillance twenty-four hours a day.

Its infrastructure includes:

• Maritime radar systems;
• High-resolution surveillance cameras;
• Communication equipment;
• Automatic Identification System technology;
• Additional maritime sensors for continuous monitoring.

Information collected by the system will be transmitted simultaneously to the control center in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the Vessel Traffic Services Center in Mersin.

Key Functions of the New System

The monitoring network will support a broad range of maritime operations, including:

• Identification and continuous tracking of vessels;
• Regulation of maritime traffic;
• Transmission of navigation information and safety warnings;
• Monitoring of designated maritime areas;
• Support for detecting illegal maritime activities;
• Issuing danger alerts to vessels;
• Immediate notification of relevant authorities during emergencies, including accidents and fires;
• Sharing meteorological information with vessels when required.

Strategic Importance in the Eastern Mediterranean

According to the Turkish government, the project will strengthen Türkiye's operational capabilities in the Eastern Mediterranean and improve coordination with the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

The commissioning of the system is also viewed by Ankara as an important step in protecting the interests of Turkish Cypriots and enhancing maritime security in the region.

Cyprus has remained divided for decades, with negotiations between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities yet to produce a comprehensive settlement regarding the island's political status. Türkiye continues to support the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and maintains close cooperation with its institutions across multiple sectors, including maritime infrastructure and transportation.
