Former German General: Türkiye Key to NATO’s Future Security
Former German General Says Türkiye Will Play a Key Role in NATO’s Future Security
Türkiye is expected to play an increasingly important role in NATO's future security architecture, according to retired German Brigadier General Dr. Klaus Wittmann ahead of the NATO Summit in Ankara on July 7–8.
Speaking before the alliance's leaders gather in the Turkish capital, Wittmann described Türkiye as a strategic pillar of NATO's southeastern defense and a major Black Sea power.
"Türkiye is the solid cornerstone of the Alliance’s defense in the southeast and a Black Sea power. The Black Sea will once again become increasingly important in the future. Türkiye is also the guardian of the Turkish Straits and possesses formidable armed forces," Wittmann said.
Growing Strategic Importance
According to Wittmann, Türkiye's role within NATO could expand further as the alliance strengthens its southeastern flank amid continuing geopolitical tensions in the region.
He noted that Ankara has become an important source of regional stability, particularly during recent developments involving the United States and Iran.
Türkiye's geographic position, control of the Turkish Straits and strong military capabilities make it one of NATO's most strategically valuable members.
"NATO Is Stronger Than Ever"
Wittmann argued that the alliance is currently stronger than at any point in its history.
He attributed this to several factors, including:
- The accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO.
- Significant increases in defense spending by member states.
- Broad political consensus on supporting Ukraine and strengthening collective defense.
"NATO is stronger than ever because of new member states, higher defense investment and a shared commitment to counter security threats," Wittmann said.
US Commitment and Europe's Defense Capabilities
The retired general said he considers it unlikely that the United States will leave NATO, although he acknowledged that political uncertainty in Washington has raised concerns among allies.
He emphasized that European NATO members should continue strengthening their own military capabilities, including air defense, satellite reconnaissance, combat aircraft and aerial refueling, to ensure the alliance remains prepared for future security challenges.
According to Wittmann, NATO's greatest strength has always been its ability to adapt to changing security environments.
Ankara Summit to Focus on Ukraine and Defense Spending
The NATO Summit will take place in Ankara on July 7–8, bringing together heads of state and government from all NATO member countries.
The meeting is expected to focus on continued military assistance to Ukraine, defense spending commitments, modernization of NATO's force structure and future defense planning.
The Ankara gathering will be the 36th NATO Summit and only the second summit hosted by Türkiye, following the alliance's meeting in Istanbul in 2004.
