Türkiye Criticizes European Union Assessment as Lacking Objectivity and Strategic Vision

Türkiye's Head of Communications, Burhanettin Duran, has criticized the European Union's latest assessment of the country, describing it as lacking both objectivity and strategic vision.

The comments came in response to the European Union's "Common Understanding" document published on July 15, 2026.

Criticism of the European Union's Position

In a statement published on the social media platform X, Duran said the evaluations contained in the document were "far from objectivity and strategic foresight."

He argued that the document disregards Türkiye's official status as a candidate country for European Union membership and demonstrates what he described as a lack of vision regarding a shared future between the two sides.

Security Role Overlooked

Duran also stated that the European Union failed to acknowledge Türkiye's important contribution to Euro-Atlantic security.

According to Duran, Türkiye's strategic role was clearly reaffirmed during the NATO Summit held in Ankara earlier this month.

He added that statements ignoring this reality do not contribute to constructive dialogue between Türkiye and the European Union.

Eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus

Addressing issues related to the Eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus, Duran said the European Union document repeats what he described as one-sided rhetoric that does not reflect international law or historical realities.

"A lasting solution is only possible through a fair, impartial and realistic approach," Duran said.

Call for Constructive Dialogue

Duran called on the European Union to adopt a more responsible approach based on mutual respect, common interests, and dialogue free from prejudice.

The statement reflects the continuing differences between Türkiye and the European Union on issues including accession negotiations, regional security, and developments in the Eastern Mediterranean.
