The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the decision could help remove one of the major obstacles standing in the way of Syria’s economic recovery and reconstruction.

“We welcome the decision of the United States to remove Syria from the list of state sponsors of terrorism. We highly appreciate the constructive approach of the United States administration, which demonstrated its determination on this issue, as well as the United States Congress, which supported it. We congratulate the Syrian government and people. This important step, which our country has long advocated, has helped overcome one of the biggest obstacles to Syria’s economic recovery and reconstruction.”

🤝 Call for international support

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on the international community to work together for the benefit of a prosperous Syria and to fulfill its commitments to end aggressive actions that could threaten this prospect.

🇺🇸 Changes to US designations

The United States administration announced on August 24, 2026 that Syria had been removed from the list of state sponsors of terrorism.

At the same time, the Syrian group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham was removed from the United States Department of State and United States Department of the Treasury lists of terrorist organizations.

⚠️ Hayat Tahrir al-Sham is recognized as a terrorist organization in Russia, where its activities are prohibited.
