Türkiye Limits Impact of Global Fuel Shock on Diesel Prices

Türkiye Limits Impact of Global Fuel Shock on Diesel Prices

Türkiye is limiting the impact of the global fuel shock

Türkiye’s Finance and Treasury Minister Mehmet Şimşek said pressure on the diesel fuel market remains high amid a shortage of supply in global energy markets. According to the minister, the government is trying to protect consumers from extraordinary global shocks while maintaining fiscal discipline.

“We are going through an extraordinary period in global energy markets”

Mehmet Şimşek noted that conditions in global energy markets remain challenging. Despite a significant decline in crude oil prices from wartime peaks, diesel fuel prices continue to face strong pressure.

“We are going through an extraordinary period in global energy markets.”

According to the minister, one of the main reasons is a shortage of supply. The situation is also affected by disruptions in the transportation of petroleum products and temporary shutdowns or interruptions at oil refineries.

The gap between crude oil and diesel prices reaches a historic level

Şimşek highlighted the significant gap between the price of Brent crude oil and diesel fuel. According to him, the diesel margin has increased to approximately five times its long-term average.

The diesel fuel margin has reached around $100 per barrel.

The minister stressed that such a significant increase in the difference between crude oil prices and the cost of finished petroleum products is primarily linked to the global supply shortage.

How Türkiye is limiting the impact of the global shock

According to Mehmet Şimşek, Türkiye is using the Eşel Mobil sliding-scale mechanism. The system is designed to regulate the impact of changes in global fuel prices on the domestic market.

Under the latest decision concerning diesel fuel, the government aims to prevent the extraordinary increase in global costs from being fully passed on to consumers.

The goal is to limit the impact of the global energy shock on consumers while maintaining fiscal discipline.

What this means for people living in Türkiye

Conditions in global energy markets directly affect fuel prices in Türkiye and can therefore influence household and business expenses. Diesel prices are important not only for car owners but also for the transportation and logistics sectors and, indirectly, for the cost of goods and services.

The sliding-scale mechanism allows the government to partially cushion the impact of sharp changes in international prices while continuing to control public spending.

According to the minister, the government is seeking to protect consumers from extraordinary external shocks while continuing to follow the principles of fiscal discipline.

Why fuel prices remain under pressure

  • Global energy markets continue to face supply shortages.
  • There are disruptions in the transportation of oil and petroleum products.
  • Some refineries have temporarily suspended or reduced operations.
  • The margin between crude oil and diesel prices is significantly above its long-term average.

Therefore, a decline in crude oil prices does not automatically guarantee a proportional decrease in diesel prices. The final cost is also affected by refining capacity, logistics, and the global balance between supply and demand.

Türkiye continues to monitor the situation

Mehmet Şimşek’s statement shows that Turkish authorities view the current situation as an extraordinary external shock and are seeking to reduce its impact on the domestic market.

At the same time, Türkiye intends to maintain fiscal discipline and avoid placing excessive pressure on public finances.

The key instrument mentioned by the minister is the Eşel Mobil sliding-scale mechanism for diesel fuel.
