Microsoft and Meta Reduce Staff as AI Costs Surge

Microsoft and Meta Cut Staff Amid Rising AI Investment Costs

U.S. technology giants Microsoft and Meta* are implementing large-scale workforce optimization measures as spending on artificial intelligence development continues to rise sharply. According to Bloomberg, both companies are restructuring costs and reallocating resources toward AI initiatives.

The shift reflects a broader trend across the tech industry, where companies are balancing heavy investments in AI infrastructure with efforts to improve operational efficiency and reduce expenses.

Microsoft’s Workforce Reduction Strategy

Microsoft has introduced a voluntary retirement program and compensation packages targeting approximately 7% of its U.S. workforce.

The initiative is expected to affect around 9,000 employees. It marks one of the company’s first large-scale programs of this type, aimed at reducing costs without immediate mass layoffs.

Meta’s Planned Job Cuts

Meta plans to reduce its workforce by approximately 10%, or around 8,000 employees.

In addition, the company intends to leave about 6,000 open positions unfilled, effectively freezing a portion of its hiring process. The decision was communicated to staff via an internal memo.

Why Companies Are Cutting Costs

According to Bloomberg, the primary driver behind these decisions is the rapidly increasing cost of artificial intelligence development. Companies are now under pressure to fund large-scale AI projects while maintaining financial stability.

Major investments in artificial intelligence are forcing tech giants to rethink workforce structures and improve internal efficiency.

As a result, firms are prioritizing automation, productivity gains, and strategic resource allocation toward AI-driven technologies.

Background

Earlier reports indicated that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company’s artificial intelligence systems have shown early signs of self-improvement capabilities, further accelerating the company’s focus on AI development.

*Meta is designated as an extremist organization and is banned in the Russian Federation.
