Fidan in Egypt: Türkiye Seeks to Bring Cairo Into the Mecca Agreement

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan visited Egypt as Ankara seeks to strengthen relations with Cairo and encourage it to join the Saudi Arabia–Türkiye–Pakistan Mecca Agreement.

🇹🇷🇪🇬 Türkiye, Egypt and the Regional Balance

During his visit, Fidan described the Greece–Cyprus–Israel trilateral partnership as a regional framework that, in Ankara’s view, affects the interests of both Türkiye and Egypt.

At the same time, Fidan stressed that the Mecca Agreement is not directed against any specific country, presenting it instead as a framework for regional cooperation and deterrence.

The Mecca framework is presented as a cooperation and deterrence mechanism rather than an alliance directed against a particular country.

🇵🇸 Gaza Also on the Agenda

Gaza was another major topic during the talks. Fidan warned that Türkiye, Qatar and Egypt could consider joint “radical steps” if Israel continues to block an agreement on a ceasefire.

He also called on the United States to put pressure on Israel regarding the situation in Gaza.

🇪🇬 Egypt Remains Cautious

Egypt has not made a specific commitment to join the Mecca Agreement. Cairo is cautious about becoming part of a framework in which Türkiye and Saudi Arabia play leading roles.

Egypt also seeks to preserve its independent regional role and maintain strategic relations with the United States, Greece, Cyprus, Israel and other major powers.

The country has also traditionally maintained communication channels with Israel, allowing it to play a mediating role in regional crises.

🌍 Wider Regional Issues

Fidan’s visit also included discussions on Libya, Sudan, Gaza and the Eastern Mediterranean.

The talks come as Türkiye and Egypt continue efforts to improve bilateral relations following years of political tensions.

The Eastern Mediterranean is also expected to remain an important issue, with Ankara seeking to strengthen its position in the region and deepen cooperation with Cairo.
