Europe Requests Gas Origin Documents from Türkiye

Europe Requests Gas Origin Documents from Türkiye

Europe Asks Türkiye to Confirm the Origin of Natural Gas Supplies

European countries are asking Türkiye to provide documents confirming the origin of natural gas supplied to Europe and to verify that the gas is not of Russian origin.

Türkiye's Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said European partners have approached Ankara with requests for clear documentation identifying the country of origin of gas supplied through Türkiye.

European countries want to receive gas through Türkiye with documentation confirming its origin, even when the original source of the gas is not immediately clear.

Europe Wants Clear Information on Gas Origin

Speaking to Turkish television channel A Haber, Bayraktar said European counterparts have requested gas supplies through Türkiye that are different from Russian gas.

“Our European colleagues approach us and say they want to receive gas through Türkiye that is different from Russian gas. Even if the origin of the gas is unknown, it must be legally documented, and Türkiye must provide European countries with documents confirming which country it belongs to.”

The minister's comments highlight the growing importance of transparency and documentation in international gas trade, particularly as European countries seek to diversify their energy supplies.

Türkiye Could Export Up to 80 Billion Cubic Meters of Gas

According to Bayraktar, Türkiye has the potential to export approximately 70–80 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year. The gas entering the country is supplied through several different routes.

Türkiye's geographic position gives it an important role in connecting gas-producing regions with European energy markets.

Importance of TurkStream

Bayraktar also emphasized the strategic importance of the TurkStream natural gas pipeline, which transports gas across the Black Sea to Türkiye and Europe.

According to the minister, the pipeline is an important element of Türkiye's energy security. He said that without TurkStream, the country would have faced significant difficulties in securing its natural gas supply.

“If we had not built this pipeline, it would have created a huge problem for Türkiye's natural gas supply.”

Türkiye's Role as an Energy Hub

The latest statements underline Türkiye's growing role in regional energy trade. The country receives natural gas through multiple routes and has infrastructure that allows it to supply both its domestic market and neighboring countries.

For Europe, cooperation with Türkiye could provide access to additional gas supplies and help diversify energy routes. At the same time, European requests for documentation on the origin of gas show the increasing importance of tracking and verifying energy supplies.

Türkiye's position between major gas-producing regions and Europe could further strengthen its importance as an energy transit and trading hub.
