Egypt and Türkiye Strengthen Strategic Partnership
Egypt and Türkiye Deepen Strategic Partnership as Regional Cooperation Expands
Egypt and Türkiye continue to strengthen their relationship three years after restoring full diplomatic ties, expanding cooperation in defense, security, and regional affairs.
Officials from both countries have described their relationship as increasingly strategic, with regular high-level meetings and growing military cooperation.
Defense Cooperation Reaches New Level
The two countries have intensified joint military exercises involving their naval, air, and special forces. Defense cooperation has also expanded into the arms industry, with Egypt acquiring Turkish drone technology while Türkiye benefits from Egyptian-made military equipment and air defense systems.
According to Turkish Defense Ministry spokesperson Zeki Aktürk, a defense cooperation memorandum signed during Egyptian Defense Minister General Ashraf Salem Zaher's visit to Ankara reflects both countries' commitment to deepening ties based on mutual trust and shared interests.
Growing Political and Regional Coordination
Relations between Cairo and Ankara have improved significantly since diplomatic normalization in 2023. Leaders and senior officials from both countries now meet regularly and describe bilateral relations as strategic.
The countries also coordinate their positions on several regional issues, including Somalia, Sudan, and efforts aimed at supporting ceasefire initiatives in the Middle East.
Analysts note that intelligence cooperation between Egypt and Türkiye has become one of the strongest areas of their bilateral relationship.
Differences Remain on Some Regional Issues
Despite closer cooperation, Cairo and Ankara continue to hold different positions on several regional matters.
Egypt remains critical of Türkiye's military presence in Syria and Libya, while maintaining that all foreign forces should eventually withdraw from Libya to support a political settlement.
At the same time, both countries share similar views on preserving Somalia's territorial integrity and support Sudan's national institutions during the country's ongoing conflict.
Regional Impact and Israeli Concerns
The strengthening partnership has attracted attention across the region, including in Israel, where some political figures have expressed concern over the expanding military capabilities and closer coordination between Egypt and Türkiye.
Experts emphasize that although cooperation between Cairo and Ankara is growing rapidly, both countries continue to maintain diplomatic relations with Israel while pursuing their own regional interests.
