Egypt and Türkiye Deepen Defense Cooperation
Egypt and Türkiye Expand Defense Cooperation After High-Level Talks
Egypt and Türkiye have agreed to deepen defense and security cooperation following high-level talks held in Ankara, marking another step forward in the normalization of relations between the two regional powers.
The discussions focused on expanding cooperation in the defense industry, strengthening military ties, and addressing shared regional security challenges.
The meeting reflects the rapid improvement in relations between Cairo and Ankara after more than a decade of political tensions.
Historic Defense Visit
The Egyptian delegation was led by Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and Minister of Defense Lt. Gen. Ashraf Salem Zaher, while the Turkish side was headed by Minister of National Defence Yaşar Güler.
The visit is the first by an Egyptian defense minister to Türkiye since 2013, highlighting the growing momentum in bilateral relations.
During the visit, the two sides discussed regional security, military cooperation, and future defense projects.
Defense Industry Cooperation
Following the ministerial meeting, Lt. Gen. Zaher met with Haluk Görgün, President of Türkiye's Defence Industry Agency.
The officials signed a Letter of Intent establishing a framework for future defense industry cooperation.
The agreement aims to expand collaboration in military technologies, industrial production, and joint capability development.
Analysts believe Egypt is particularly interested in Türkiye's rapidly growing defense industry, including unmanned aerial systems and advanced military technologies.
Growing Military Partnership
The latest talks follow several months of increased military contacts between the two countries.
Recent developments include:
- ✈️ Joint air force exercises between Egypt and Türkiye.
- 🛡️ The fifth meeting of the Egyptian-Turkish Military Cooperation Committee.
- 🤝 Participation in multinational military exercises, including Anatolian Eagle 2026 and Flintlock 2026.
These activities demonstrate a significant expansion of practical military cooperation after years of limited engagement.
Future Cooperation
Experts suggest that cooperation may extend beyond military exercises into joint defense production.
Reports indicate that Egypt is interested in expanding cooperation on drone manufacturing and could also participate in Türkiye's fifth-generation fighter aircraft program, KAAN, as an industrial partner.
The strengthening partnership comes as both countries seek closer coordination on regional issues, including developments in Libya, Sudan, and the Horn of Africa, while enhancing their strategic cooperation in an evolving Middle Eastern security environment.
