Azerbaijan and Türkiye Take Energy Partnership to New Strategic Stage

Azerbaijan and Türkiye Take Energy Partnership to New Strategic Stage

Azerbaijan and Türkiye are taking their energy cooperation into a new strategic phase, with both countries expanding their partnership beyond traditional oil and gas projects.

Speaking at the 5th Azerbaijan–Türkiye Energy Forum in Baku, Azerbaijan’s Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov said the two countries are focusing increasingly on energy security, diversified supply routes, electricity interconnections and renewable energy.

From gas cooperation to broader energy integration

According to Shahbazov, the new stage of cooperation is centred on strengthening national and regional energy security while adapting energy systems to changing market conditions.

The two countries are also working to improve electricity interconnections, integrate energy systems and develop a shared regional vision for the future of energy.

The Azerbaijan–Türkiye Energy Forum brings together government officials and working groups covering hydrocarbons, renewable energy, energy efficiency, electricity markets, regulation and mining.

Major projects are expanding the partnership

Several recent developments demonstrate the growing scale of bilateral energy cooperation.

  • The Igdir–Nakhchivan gas pipeline has been commissioned, strengthening gas connectivity between Türkiye and Nakhchivan.
  • Turkish Petroleum has entered the Shah Deniz project in Azerbaijan.
  • An agreement has been reached to export part of the gas expected from the full-scale development of the Absheron gas field to Türkiye.
  • Azerbaijani gas transported through Türkiye is reaching new European markets beyond the existing coverage of the Southern Gas Corridor, as well as Syria.

The partnership is increasingly focused not only on gas exports, but also on electricity, renewable energy, efficiency and regional energy connectivity.

Energy cooperation with a regional focus

The forum also reflects the broader regional role of Azerbaijan and Türkiye in energy transportation and infrastructure.

For Azerbaijan, Türkiye remains a key route for bringing energy resources to international markets. For Türkiye, cooperation with Azerbaijan supports diversification of energy supplies and strengthens its position as an important regional energy hub.

The countries are also looking at opportunities created by the rapid development of renewable energy and the changing structure of electricity markets.

Fifth Azerbaijan–Türkiye Energy Forum

The fifth edition of the forum is being held in Baku with the participation of Azerbaijan’s Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov and Türkiye’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar.

The forum protocol is expected to be signed at the end of the event, followed by a media briefing.

The Azerbaijan–Türkiye Energy Forum was established within the framework of the Joint Commission on Economic Cooperation. The first meeting was held in Baku in December 2021, followed by forums in Istanbul, Nakhchivan and Izmir.

The latest meeting underlines the increasingly strategic role of energy cooperation between the two countries and its potential impact on regional energy security and supply routes.
