Türkiye Expects Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” to Boost Interest in Ancient Troy

Interest in the ancient city of Troy, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the northwestern Turkish province of Çanakkale, is expected to increase following the release of director Christopher Nolan’s film “The Odyssey”, based on Homer’s epic poem.

Rüstem Aslan, head of the archaeological excavation team at Troy, said that the mythological adventure film tells the story of King Odysseus’s return to Ithaca after the Trojan War and could significantly contribute to promoting the ancient city and the surrounding region.

Troy already welcomes around 400,000 visitors every year and is one of Çanakkale’s most important cultural and tourism attractions.

International Interest in Troy Is Already Growing

According to Aslan, an exhibition dedicated to Troy that opened in June at the Colosseum in Rome as part of cooperation between the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Italian Ministry of Culture has already attracted significant international attention.

The release of Nolan’s new film has further increased interest in Troy, according to the archaeologist.

Aslan described the exhibition in Rome as one of the largest exhibitions dedicated to Troy in recent years. It also features artifacts from Anatolian civilizations connected with the history of Troy.

He believes that the exhibition could have a long-term positive impact on tourism development in the region.

“The Odyssey” Could Follow the Success of “Troy”

Aslan noted that Wolfgang Petersen’s 2004 film “Troy” also contributed to a significant increase in international interest in the ancient city.

“Undoubtedly, this film will also make a significant contribution to the development of tourism and increase interest in Troy.”

Aslan said that he watched “The Odyssey” at a special screening in Çanakkale. According to him, Nolan largely remains faithful to Homer’s epic poem while presenting Odysseus’s return home through a modern cinematic interpretation.

Nilgün Gökser, chairwoman of the Çanakkale Association of Tourist Hoteliers, Operators and Investors, said that Troy is not only an important historical site but also a globally recognized cultural and tourism brand.

According to Gökser, “The Odyssey” represents an important opportunity to introduce Çanakkale’s thousands of years of history, rich cultural heritage and tourism potential to an international audience.

She emphasized that turning the global attention generated by the film into long-term value for the destination will require coordinated efforts from public institutions, local authorities, professional organizations and representatives of the tourism sector.

“Today, the whole world is talking about The Odyssey. Our goal is to direct this global interest toward Troy, its ancient homeland of Çanakkale, and the rich cultural heritage of this unique region.”

Troy and the Tourism Potential of Çanakkale

The ancient city of Troy is one of the most internationally recognized archaeological sites in Türkiye. Its connection with Homer’s Iliad and the mythology surrounding the Trojan War has made it a major destination for travelers interested in ancient history and archaeology.
