A Modern Swan Lake: Hip-hop and Ballet on One Stage
Hip-hop and Ballet: An Unusual “Swan Lake” in Istanbul
A contemporary version of “Swan Lake” will be staged in Istanbul, combining classical ballet with hip-hop and breaking in one performance.
The production SWANS – Swan Lake is created by the Tan Sağtürk Young Ballet Academy to the music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
Performances will take place on April 28–29 at Paribu Art in Istanbul.
Classical Story, Modern Movement
The show brings together two very different dance languages. Classical ballet technique meets the energy, rhythm, and expressiveness of street dance. Instead of changing the music, the creators changed the movement style, giving the well-known story a completely new visual form.
A total of 57 academy students take part in the performance, highlighting the educational and experimental nature of the project.
Where Ballet Meets Street Culture
The core idea of the production is the contrast between the discipline of academic ballet and the freedom of hip-hop choreography. Group scenes inspired by modern street culture are combined with elements of classical staging, creating a fresh interpretation of the famous ballet.
This performance shows how classical art can be reimagined through contemporary culture without losing its original musical foundation.
As a result, “Swan Lake” becomes not just a traditional ballet, but a creative platform where different dance styles and cultural expressions meet on one stage.
