WhatsApp Launches Usernames for Better Privacy
WhatsApp Introduces Usernames for More Private Messaging
WhatsApp has started the gradual rollout of a new feature that will allow users to communicate without revealing their phone numbers, marking a major step forward in privacy and account protection.
The new system will let users connect through unique usernames instead of sharing personal phone numbers.
What Will Change
The feature is being introduced in stages and will become available to all users gradually over the coming year.
According to early details, the update includes several key changes:
- Username reservation has already begun for some users
- Each username will be unique
- A username generator will help users choose available names
- Additional privacy settings will be introduced
More Control Over Privacy
Users will be able to decide who can find them using their username, giving them more control over personal visibility inside the platform.
This feature is expected to improve privacy, especially for people who communicate with clients, online communities, or new contacts.
An optional additional security key may also be introduced, allowing users to restrict who can send them messages.
How to Check Availability
Users can check whether the feature is available in their application by following these steps:
- Open WhatsApp
- Go to Settings
- Select Account
- Look for the Username option
Since the rollout is gradual, the feature may not yet be visible for all users.
The addition of usernames brings WhatsApp closer to other major messaging platforms that already allow communication without phone number sharing.
