Türkiye's Atomic Clock Begins Orbital Testing

Türkiye has reached another milestone in its national space program as the country's first domestically developed rubidium atomic clock has successfully entered low-Earth orbit and begun in-orbit testing.

The spacecraft carrying the atomic clock has already transmitted its first signal from space, marking the start of real-world testing.

Launched Aboard SpaceX Falcon 9

The rubidium atomic clock was launched on 7 July aboard SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket as part of the Transporter-17 mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

The device, officially known as the Rubidium Atomic Frequency Standard (RAFS), is installed aboard a compact 6U CubeSat, where it will undergo extensive testing under real space conditions.

A Key Technology for Türkiye's National Space Program

The RAFS project forms part of the objectives of Türkiye's National Space Program. Atomic clocks are essential components of satellite navigation systems because they measure time with extraordinary precision using the natural resonance frequency of atoms.

These systems play a crucial role in:

  • Satellite navigation and positioning.
  • Telecommunications and data synchronization.
  • Scientific research missions.
  • Future regional satellite navigation systems.

Successful orbital testing will help validate Türkiye's first domestically developed space-qualified atomic clock.

Developed by Turkish Scientists

The project is led by the Turkish Space Agency, with the National Metrology Institute of TÜBİTAK serving as the main contractor. Additional contributions were made by TÜBİTAK UZAY and İTÜNOVA.

During the mission, engineers will evaluate the clock's performance in orbit and collect valuable data for future satellite communication, navigation, and scientific applications.

Reducing Dependence on Foreign Technology

According to Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacır, Türkiye has previously relied on imported atomic clock technology for its satellite projects.

"Successful validation of this technology in orbit will reduce dependence on foreign suppliers while providing valuable engineering experience for Türkiye's future satellite programs."

The mission represents an important step toward developing Türkiye's own satellite navigation capabilities and strengthening the country's growing space industry.
