Türkiye Updates Rules for Foreign-Plated Vehicles
Türkiye Simplifies Rules for Foreign-Plated Vehicles
Türkiye has introduced new regulations for vehicles with foreign license plates, making it easier for eligible drivers to share driving responsibilities during their stay in the country.
The updated rules were introduced jointly by the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Trade and primarily apply to Turkish citizens who permanently reside abroad and temporarily bring their vehicles into Türkiye.
The new regulations are designed to increase flexibility for drivers while improving road safety during long journeys.
Who Can Drive the Vehicle?
Family Members Can Drive Without the Owner
Close relatives may now legally drive the vehicle even if the owner is not inside the car.
The following family members are eligible:
- 👨👩👧👦 Spouse.
- 👴 Grandparents.
- 👨👩👧 Parents.
- 👧 Children.
- 👦 Grandchildren.
However, two conditions must be met:
- The vehicle owner must be present in Türkiye.
- The relatives must also permanently reside abroad.
Any Non-Resident Can Drive with the Owner Present
If the vehicle owner is inside the car, any person who permanently lives outside Türkiye may legally drive the vehicle.
Emergency Situations
In emergency circumstances, a resident of Türkiye may also drive the vehicle, provided that the registered owner remains inside the car.
The changes are intended to make long-distance travel more convenient by allowing drivers to alternate behind the wheel.
Improving Road Safety
According to the authorities, the updated regulations aim to reduce driver fatigue, encourage safer travel, and simplify the use of foreign-plated vehicles for Turkish citizens living abroad and their families.
The new rules are already in effect and provide greater flexibility for eligible drivers while maintaining customs and vehicle registration requirements.
