Plastic Waste in Türkiye Exceeds Global Average by 45%
Plastic Waste Per Person in Türkiye Is 45% Above the Global Average
A new report published by the Zero Waste Foundation has revealed that each person in Türkiye generates around 48 kilograms of plastic waste per year, which is 44.9% higher than the global average.
The report examines plastic production, consumption, recycling, environmental pollution and international plastic waste trade in both Türkiye and around the world.
Global Plastic Consumption Continues to Grow
According to data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), global plastic consumption nearly doubled between 2000 and 2019, increasing from 234 million tonnes to 460 million tonnes.
During the same period, annual plastic waste increased from 156 million tonnes to 353 million tonnes.
Only about 9% of plastic waste worldwide is currently recycled.
Türkiye Launches New Campaign
Speaking at the report presentation in Istanbul, Zero Waste Foundation Chairman Samed Ağırbaş announced the launch of a nationwide campaign aimed at reducing plastic consumption.
The initiative will first be implemented across Türkiye before being expanded internationally.
National Action Plan in Preparation
On 31 August and 1 September, Istanbul will host a two-day workshop dedicated to plastic waste reduction.
The event will bring together representatives from:
- 14 government ministries;
- More than 40 public institutions;
- Universities;
- Non-governmental organizations;
- Environmental experts.
Participants will discuss environmental goals for the next 5, 10, 15 and 30 years, after which Türkiye's national action plan for reducing plastic waste is expected to be presented.
The initiative is intended to reduce plastic pollution, improve recycling rates and support long-term environmental sustainability in Türkiye.
