Türkiye Launches Real-Time Drone Tracking Initiative
Türkiye Introduces Centralized Real-Time Drone Monitoring System
Türkiye is preparing to introduce a centralized drone monitoring system that will allow authorities to track unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in real time across the country.
The draft regulation was prepared by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation under the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure and is aimed at improving airspace safety, strengthening oversight of drone operations, and increasing accountability for violations.
The new platform will enable authorities to monitor drone flights in real time, identify operators, and quickly detect potential airspace conflicts.
Three Flight Categories
Under the proposed rules, all drone operations will be divided into three categories:
- Open category.
- Specific category.
- Certified category.
The classification is intended to regulate drone operations according to their level of risk and technical requirements.
Mandatory Registration for Drones
One of the most significant changes is the introduction of mandatory registration requirements.
All drones weighing 500 grams or more must be registered.
The same requirement will apply to any drone equipped with a camera or microphone, regardless of its weight.
Drones weighing more than 150 kilograms will be entered into Türkiye’s official aviation registry.
New Rules for Drone Operators
The draft regulation also introduces new requirements for drone pilots.
- Operators must be at least 16 years old.
- Additional permissions may be required depending on the flight category.
- Foreign operators will face stricter procedures.
Foreign drone operators will be required to submit flight applications at least 20 days before the planned operation.
Stricter Enforcement Measures
The centralized monitoring system will allow authorities to identify unauthorized operators and track violations more efficiently.
The era of largely unrestricted drone flights is coming to an end as authorities gain the ability to monitor and control drone activity in real time.
Officials expect the system to improve safety around airports, government facilities, military zones, and other sensitive locations.
Criminal Liability for Violations
The proposed rules include tougher penalties for operators who ignore regulations.
Flying without authorization or entering restricted airspace may result in criminal proceedings in addition to administrative fines.
Privacy violations involving drone cameras will also be subject to increased scrutiny.
Recording private homes, apartment windows, private property, or restricted areas without permission may lead to prosecution under Türkiye’s privacy laws and the Criminal Code.
A New Stage in Drone Regulation
The proposed framework represents one of the most significant changes to drone regulation in Türkiye in recent years. Through real-time monitoring, mandatory registration, and stricter enforcement, authorities aim to create a safer and more transparent environment for drone operations across the country.
