Türkiye to Ban Single-Use Plastics Under Zero Waste Plan

Türkiye to Ban Single-Use Plastics Under Zero Waste Plan

Türkiye is taking a major step for the environment by phasing out single-use plastics as part of its Zero Waste initiative. The landmark decision aims to reduce pollution, cut emissions, and promote sustainable alternatives across the country.

📋 What Will Be Banned?

The new regulations, drafted by the Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Ministry, will initially target the most common single-use plastic items:

  • 🍴 Plastic cutlery (forks, knives, spoons)
  • 🍽️ Plastic plates
  • 🥤 Plastic cups
  • 🧃 Plastic straws
  • 👂 Cotton buds (with plastic stems)

Future measures will also cover partially plastic products, including:

  • 🧻 Wet wipes
  • 🧹 Cleaning towels
  • 📦 Cargo bags

These items will require clear labeling to inform consumers about their plastic content.

🌱 Environmental & Economic Impact

Officials estimate the move could deliver significant benefits:

  • 🌫️ Prevent emissions equivalent to 1.5 million tons of CO₂ annually
  • 💰 Save approximately 1.5 billion Turkish Liras in waste management costs

The ban aligns with Türkiye's 2025–2028 National Circular Economy Strategy and promotes eco-friendly alternatives such as:

🥃 Glass 🏺 Porcelain 🪵 Wood 📦 Cardboard

✅ Proven Success: Plastic Bag Fee

Türkiye has already seen remarkable success in reducing plastic waste. Since introducing paid plastic bags in 2019, the country has achieved:

  • 🛑 Over 3 million tons of plastic waste prevented
  • 🌍 252,761 tons of greenhouse gas emissions cut
  • 💵 42.1 billion liras saved in raw material imports
"With single-use plastic consumption continuing to rise globally, this ban marks a significant step toward a cleaner, more sustainable future for Türkiye."

🔮 Looking Ahead

The phase-out represents a critical component of Türkiye's broader environmental strategy, positioning the country as a regional leader in sustainable waste management and circular economy practices.
