Turkey Introduces 699,245 Lira Fine for Violating Turtle Nesting Beach Restrictions
A fine of 699,245 Turkish lira will be imposed for violations of strict night-time access rules on several protected beaches along the Turkish Riviera.
The regulations are aimed at protecting the nesting areas of endangered sea turtles, including caretta caretta and chelonia mydas, which are highly sensitive to human disturbance during the breeding season.
The restrictions will be in effect from 1 May to the end of September 2026.
Night-Time Access Ban
Under the new rules, access to designated beaches is completely prohibited between 20:00 and 08:00.
In addition to the night-time ban, several activities are strictly forbidden in these protected zones at all times:
- entry of vehicles onto the beach areas;
- setting up tents or camping;
- lighting fires;
- using barbecues or open flames.
Important Turtle Nesting Areas
The 30-kilometer Belek beach is considered one of the most important sea turtle nesting sites not only in Turkey but across the entire Mediterranean region.
In total, 21 beaches across the provinces of Muğla, Mersin, Adana, and Hatay are included in the protection program. Nine of these beaches are located in Antalya.
According to Haberler.com, the protected beaches include:
- Ekincik, Dalyan, Dalaman, Fethiye, Patara, Kale;
- Kumluca, Olympos-Cirali, Tekirova, Belek, Kizilot, Demirtas, Gazipasa;
- Anamur, Goksu Delta, Alata, Davultepe, Kazanli, Akyatan, Yumurtalik, Samandag.
Authorities aim to ensure the safe reproduction of endangered sea turtles by minimizing human impact during the critical nesting period.
The new measures are part of broader environmental protection efforts along Turkey’s Mediterranean coastline, where sea turtle populations remain under constant ecological pressure.
